Prive › Photo vault without an account
Photo vault apps without an account: why it matters and what to check
Short answer: A photo vault that works without an account can't connect your hidden photos to your email or identity, and there is no login to phish, leak or reset by someone else. Before you trust any vault, check four things: no sign-up at all, files encrypted on the device with a named cipher such as AES-256-GCM, backups that go to your own cloud rather than the developer's servers, and an App Store privacy label of “Data Not Collected”. Prive meets all four.
Why an account is a risk for a vault
- It ties the vault to you. An email address links your hidden photos to your identity on the developer's systems.
- It creates a way in. Many vaults reset a forgotten PIN by email. Anyone with access to your email may be able to do the same.
- It usually means servers. Accounts exist to sync data to the company's cloud. Every server is something that can be breached, subpoenaed or shut down.
Check any vault app in two minutes
| Check | Where to look | What you want to see |
|---|---|---|
| Sign-up | Open the app for the first time | A PIN screen, not an email form |
| Encryption | App Store description or the developer's website | A named cipher (for example AES-256-GCM) applied on the device, not just “military-grade” |
| Backup location | Description, settings, privacy policy | Your own iCloud or no cloud at all, not the developer's servers |
| Privacy label | App Store → App Privacy | “Data Not Collected”, or at least nothing under “Data Used to Track You” |
| Recovery | Support page or FAQ | A recovery key you keep, not an email reset |
| Ads and SDKs | Description, privacy label | No ads, no analytics |
The trade-off: who resets your PIN?
Without an account, nobody can reset your PIN by email, including the developer. The answer is a recovery key you keep yourself. In Prive, that is a 24-word Recovery Key shown in Settings. Write it on paper when you set up the app; with it, you can reset a forgotten PIN and restore your key on a new device.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a photo vault app that doesn't require an account?
Yes. Prive has no sign-up, email or login. You create a PIN on first launch, and photos are encrypted on your iPhone.
How do I recover a vault without an account if I forget the PIN?
With a recovery key you saved when setting up the app. In Prive, the 24-word Recovery Key resets a forgotten PIN.
Is a vault without an account less safe?
Not in itself. It removes the email login as a way in and keeps your identity out of the developer's systems. The trade-off is that you are responsible for your recovery key.
How can I tell if a vault app uploads my photos?
Read the App Store description and privacy policy for where backups go, and check the App Privacy section. Photos or videos listed as collected data mean the developer receives them.
